Six Evening Class Sessions
Instructors: Jerry Stover and Karl Graffte
Have you always wanted to venture out and make
your own wooden hand planes but didn't know how or
where to begin?
If so join us for our new wooden hand plane class
this spring. In this class you will custom build 3
classic wooden planes in traditional and modern
styles. Each student will master the steps needed to
build and keep a large 24" jointer plane, a
"Krenov" style bench plane, and a classic
block plane.
The woods used are yet to be determined and will
be based on species availability, but all planes
will be built out of exotic and specialty stock
suitable for hand plane construction. Space is
limited to 10 students for this intense hands-on
course, so book early.
Details:
- 6 - 3 Hour Class Sessions
- Students will build and keep three hand planes
designs
- All materials are provided
- Exotic and Specialty woods will be used
- Space is limited to 10 students - book early
- Cost is $295 (Class can be paid in six
installments of $50 each at the beginning of
each class session).
- $50 Non-Refundable deposit required to hold a
space in this class.

Matthew built his name in
woodworking as the managing editor of Fine Woodworking magazine, author of
woodworking books, an chair making video from FWW, and frequent articles.
Matthew currently lives in Tennessee where he builds furniture in his
workshop (featured in FWW magazine and blog), writes for numerous
magazines, and travels teaching woodworking classes.

of the Feb/March 2009 issue of Woodcraft magazine. Inspired by
Japanese Tansu designs of the 18th and 19th
century, these modular units can be stacked in various arrangements to
create sideboards, entertainment centers and more.
Even if you decide to change the dimensions or design, learning
the unique and simple joinery techniques used on these boxes can be
used to construct most any case-piece.

Classic Dovetails by Jig and Hand

Required: Dovetail saw (either a traditional Western dovetail saw
or Japanese dovetail saw, Sharp chisels approximately 3/8” and ½”
or ¾”, 1” optional
and Wood for dovetailing will be provided
Description:
Whether they are cut by hand or machine, the dovetail joint’s beauty
is challenged only by its strength. Many woodworkers admire the
joinery but are intimidated to try it on their next project. Here is
your chance to try it out hands-on under expert assistance.
During the class, Matthew will demonstrate dovetailing methods using
both after-market and shop-made router jigs, as well as his famous
hand cut dovetail techniques. Learn to layout and mark dovetails, as
well as many small tips that put you in control of this classic but
intimidating joint. You’ll also learn easy fixes that allow you to
salvage miscut joinery.
Following the demonstration students, will be given the opportunity
to try out the techniques they learned with Matthew’s guidance.
Students will be provided wood and plenty of time to practice hand cut
dovetailing techniques.
As a special bonus, we will show you how to use the new
Work Sharp system to sharpen your chisels to an edge you can shave
with. The system will be used by students throughout the class to keep
a honed edge on their tools.
